TV or not TV

I’ve been adamant from the start that Thomas will NOT be exposed to too much TV. Then along came Cbeebies and he loves it. Now we have 15 mins of Cbeebies a day max and on weekends, especially he has ‘a bit more’ in the morning. Other mommies I know feel I am too anal about the TV thing and should let him watch as much as it’s ‘educational’. I’m not too convinced though as I feel the act of watching TV and getting into it is bad for his age – he should be figuring his toys out and ‘reading’ his books. Am I too anal? Will Thomas be the only kid in his class who doesn’t know Ben 10 and Spiderman, Wrestlemania et al when the time comes?!

Shaun is 2 and we let him watch TV as much as he likes, as long as it is appropriate for his age. He love Disney movies and we collect them all. He still plays a lot with his toys, loves to “read” and likes being outdoors on his trampoline and we also have educational playtime where we draw, play dough, paint and learn with the Practica system. He can spend hours drawing and playing with toy cars. He doesn’t watch after 4 in the afternoon and I think he is balanced. The only time he watch a lot of TV is when he is ill or it is very cold and he wants to stay under the covers and cannot play outside. But this also happens only a few times a month. You as a mom can decide what is allowed in your home. Don’t stress about it.

You’re the mommy, and as long as you are aware, then you’ll do fine. Joel has never watched wrestling but has learnt about the characters from his friends anyway. So Thomas won’t be a reject!

I am with you on the TV thing. I think the longer you can keep him busy, and learn him to keep himself busy, without TV, the better. But the odd program every now and then can’t do too much harm.

Minki is only 1, but she watches KOOWEE in the afternoon when Daddy and me are having our coffee (approx 30minutes). She already dances and sings with the characters, and she also likes it when Daddy watch music channels. We didn’t really made a decision about this, but she is unfortunately exposed to other stuff (like Egoli) too.

Mine watches a lot of movies. No TV, this allows us to make sure we know what they are watching. We have a very big collection of kiddie movies and have started branching out into things that Rivan (4) likes, eg: Free Willy and ET.Although I think they sometimes watch to much, they don’t sit still and watch a movie. They will play in their room with cars, blocks or drawing while the movie is on.

Rule of thumb: there’s no such thing as anal when it comes to your own child. They pick up the other stuff by osmosis, promise 🙂
